Cats: How to toilet teach them

It would be fantastic if cats came with their own manuals. At least then you'd have an idea of what to do when it came to toilet training. To start with we first have to teach our cat how to use the litter tray before we can move on to the proper toilet.

Like the litter tray, you have to train a cat to use the toilet in short stages - I'm going to save you some pain, this is what I found while I used to toilet teach my cat...

The first step in the toilet training process is training yourself. How do you expect your cat to learn something new if you can't? We have two easy tasks to remember, the seat should always be left down and the bathroom door open. It's also a good idea to leave a little sticky on the door or mirror-a friendly reminder to family to do this too.

The 2nd step is to slowly move our litter tray beside the toilet. Cats prefer to use the toilet in private if they can so make sure to start off your litter tray in a quiet area of the house., but make sure your cat knows where it went or this could get messy. Slowly increase the height of the litter box, only an few cm's to start with. Use cardboard or phone books, nothing of any significant importance to you and use something you can get your paws on easily. Don't use anything to slippery or the litter box might slip and freak your cat out (I learned this the hard way.)

The cat will start leaping on to the toilet first before stepping back down onto the litter box. You should be trained too keep the toilet seat up and bathroom door open by now so give yourself a pat on the back! Your cat should be getting used to the open toilet too.

We are making good progress so our next step is to put the litter tray directly on top of the toilet.. Again we should let the cat get used to the setup before changing it again slightly in a few days time. Lift the seat on the toilet, measure the diameter at its widest point and buy a metal mixing bowl.

Now we will remove the litter box & place the new mixing bowl insde. To make it "Feel like home" stick a couple of inches of litter inside. It can be quite annoying to clean but we are very VERY close to never having to change another litter tray again. Watch your cat as it uses the toilet-you have to teach it how to squat.

Next time your cat uses the toilet, catch it and lift its feet out of the bowl and place them on the toilet seat (front feet at the back and in the middle; back feet at the sides.)

After each successful session, reward it all the time and sooner hopefully than later, you'll never have to change another kitty litter ever again.
